MACKEREL AND BLUES ARE RUNNING STRONG

Spanish mackerel and bluefish action improved on piers along the northern Outer Banks beaches Thursday. Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier landed spot and blues during the morning and a few spot and pompano during the afternoon.

On Avalon Pier, fair numbers of spot, a few bluefish and some flounder were decked. Spanish, bluefish and pompano were caught off and on during the day by Nags Head Pier fishermen. On Jennette's Pier, a few Spanish and bluefish were landed on jiggers during the morning. Afternoon fishing was slow.

Outer Banks Pier reported scattered Spanish mackerel, bluefish, spot and sand perch landed early in the day and a handful of nice spot taken in the early afternoon.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier anglers caught some spot, mullet, several pompano and a six-pound flounder. On Avon Pier, fishing was slow due to rough seas. Frisco Pier also reported slow fishing.

Surf fishing from Corolla to Oregon Inlet was fairly slow, with only scattered bottom fish taken. Around Oregon Inlet, some nice croakers and a few sea mullet were landed. Some nice puppy drum were beached at Cape Point on Wednesday night. Fishing during the day Thursday was slow.

Headboats fishing around Oregon Inlet on Thursday caught lots of nice croakers, a few blues and some keeper flounders. Inshore trolling was fairly good for Spanish mackerel. Outside of Oregon Inlet in deeper water, king mackerel action was good, although most of the fish were small.

Yellowfin tuna fishing was fair Thursday, with charters landing from two to eight big fish per boat. Dolphin fishing was fair. Additionally, a few billfish were released.

Rough seas off Hatteras kept Gulf Stream fishing at a minimum. The two charter craft that went offshore caught a few dolphin and a couple of tunas Thursday.

Bottom fishing along the Dare Coast should be pretty good this weekend if rough seas dirty the water inshore.

Water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 76.5 degrees on Thursday. by CNB
