CALM SEAS, CALM SKIES, MAKE FOR NICE CASTING AND CATCHING

Almost no wind and fairly calm seas along the northern beaches made surf casting a pleasure Friday morning. Anglers fishing the incoming tide caught a few nice mullet, pompano and a few spot from deeper sloughs.

Bottom fish and a few trout were taken around Oregon Inlet. Quite a few three-to-five-pound puppy drum were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. A handful of puppy drum were beached at Cape Point.

Speckled trout, puppy drum and flounder were taken by anglers on the sound side of the island in the Canadian Hole area.

Flounder were landed in the Hatteras Inlet area. Some gray trout were caught by anglers fishing on the sound side in the inlet area.

Pier fishing was generally slow along the Outer Banks Friday.

Scattered spot and bluefish were landed on Kitty Hawk Pier. Anglers on Avalon Pier managed to catch only a few spot.

Some spot, small bluefish, a few Spanish mackerel and several gray and speckled trout were taken on Nags Head Pier.

Jennette's Pier reported few fish landed, but those that were decked included pompano, small bluefish, flounder, spot and sea mullet.

A good run of spot developed on Outer Banks Pier late in the morning and continued for a couple of hours.

South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught a few nice spot and sea mullet. Avon Pier reported slow fishing, with a couple of spot and pompano landed. Frisco Pier was temporarily closed because of a structural problem.

Inshore trolling in Pamlico Sound and adjacent channels west of Oregon Inlet was fair, with some nice Spanish mackerel and small bluefish taken.

Headboats operating around the Oregon Inlet bridge caught good numbers of croaker, a few flounder and small trout.

Fair numbers of tuna were taken by charter boats fishing out of Oregon Inlet. Action was scattered from the triple zeros to ``the point.'' Dolphin fishing was slow. Seven billfish were released by the Oregon Inlet and Pirates Cove fleets.

Dolphin fishing was good in the Gulf Stream off Hatteras. Charters also landed a few tuna and some wahoo. A few billfish were released.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 76.5 degrees Friday. by CNB
