Just how good is the Old Dominion field hockey team?
All questions left unanswered by last week's 7-0 rout over Penn State, ranked No. 10 preseason, will be resolved today when the No. 4 Lady Monarchs play host to top-ranked and defending NCAA champion James Madison at 1 p.m. at Foreman Field.
ODU, which beat the Dukes, 3-2, in last year's Colonial Athletic Association championship game and leads the series, 24-3, is 1-0.
James Madison, which returns two-time national scoring leader and CAA player of the year Carole Thate, enters today's match at 2-1. JMU blistered CAA foe Radford, 5-0, in the season opener, dropped a 3-2 overtime game to unranked Wake Forest and blew by Cal-Berkley, 8-1, on Tuesday.
The game also marks the homecoming of several local players including Cox graduates Heather Hoehlein, a senior back, junior forward Kelly McDonald, and freshman back Sally Tempest, as well as Kempsville grads Holly Garriott, a sophomore midfielder/back, and assistant coach Eileen Arnaldo, who earned All-American honors at James Madison last season.
Head coach Christy Morgan also returns to the area after playing for ODU's national championship teams in 1982, 1983 and 1984. Morgan is the first person in NCAA history to win crowns as a player and coach.
The Lady Monarchs return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they play host to No. 7 Northeastern (1-0).
MEN'S SOCCER: ODU men's soccer team fell, 1-0, to the University of Connecticut on Chris Crowley's goal 27 seconds before halftime on Friday.
The Monarchs (1-2) pressured the Huskies (1-2) the entire second half, but UConn goalie Robb Meyers made five saves, two in the waning moments. by CNB
