FOR A LOST FRIEND, CHURCHLAND STUNS NORCOM, 41-6

A team on a special mission, underdog Churchland opened its season Friday night with a stunning 41-6 victory over seventh-ranked Norcom at Churchland.

It was the first time since 1989 the Truckers had beaten the Greyhounds and Norcom's first loss to another Portsmouth school since a region playoff loss to Wilson in 1991.

Aaron Bailey, who broke three long touchdown runs and rushed for 111 yards in only nine carries, called the win ``very special for us because we dedicated the game to Lindsey Rogers.''

All the Churchland players wore a No. 41 sticker on the back on their helmets, the number that Rogers had been expected to wear this year.

The uniform is not being worn after Rogers died while playing basketball at the school last season.

And Churchland scored exactly 41 points.

``We really wanted to win this game,'' said Bailey, a 5-9, 170-pound senior. ``And I felt we were going to, but not by such a score.''

Churchland capitalized on numerous early mistakes by the Greyhounds and vaulted to a 34-0 halftime lead, the largest margin the Truckers have ever built up over Norcom at intermission.

``We opened up our offense and probably did some things they didn't expect,'' said Truckers coach Ken Taylor.

One was a misdirection play where split end Jamin Elliott scampered 42 yards for a touchdown. The six Churchland scores all came on different play calls.

Churchland quarterback Otis Jones threw for scores to Bailey and Kevin Lewis. Termaine Sessoms tallied the other Truckers touchdown on a 3-yard run.

First Colonial 16 Bayside 10

VIRGINIA BEACH - On a night when the footing was miserable at best, Jesse Harris showed up with some pretty steady dogs.

First Colonial's senior placekicker nailed field goals of 23, 27 and 25 yards and added the extra point to Anthony Jeannette's 31-yard first quarter touchdown run to provide all the scoring the Patriots (1-0) would need.

``I suppose (my foot) did win the game, didn't it?'' Harris said. ``It was a little wet out there and I was kind of nervous at first, but we all settled down.

``People had no respect for us, but maybe they will now.''

Harris missed a 44-yard attempt late in the second quarter, but on Bayside's second play of the following drive, Jason Winfield intercepted a Jimmy Walker pass to give the Patriots the ball on the Marlins 31.

Jeannette promptly went 31 yards, starting right and cutting left against the grain to give First Colonial a 7-3 lead.

Bayside (0-1) had taken an early 3-0 advantage on Kevin Cherwa's 32-yard field goal.

Harris also had a 32-yarder blocked early in the third quarter - that attempt was set up by Steve Tyler's 66-yard second-half kickoff return.

After Harris' second field goal, Bayside cut the lead to 13-10 when Shundel Johnson pulled in Walker's 16-yard pass with 10 minutes left in the game.

Kempsville 26 Great Bridge 6

CHESAPEAKE - It wasn't until the last two minutes of the game that the Chiefs pulled away. The Wildcats (0-2) were trailing by just 14-6 with about five minutes to play, but they failed to convert a fake punt from their own 33, setting up Kempsville (1-0) for one touchdown, and a fumble in the waning seconds moments put the Chiefs in position for another score.

Trey Simkins scored Kempsville's late touchdowns on runs of 8 and 9 yards. He finished the game with 110 yards on 21 carries.

The ninth-ranked Chiefs took a 14-0 lead on a 23-yard TD run by Alex Lleces in the first quarter and an 8-yard jaunt by Fred Sanders in the second. Lleces wound up with 77 yards rushing on nine tries.

Booker T. Washington 10 Oscar Smith 8

CHESAPEAKE - The Bookers blanked the Tigers for three quarters before letting Oscar Smith come roaring back, and a low snap on a field-goal attempt late in the fourth helped 10th-ranked Booker T. hold on for the victory.

Shawn Minter's 35-yard touchdown run on the opening series of the second quarter and Jaynard Tillman's 25-yard field goal midway through the third quarter gave Booker T. (1-1) a 10-0 lead.

Oscar Smith (1-1) got on the board with 8:44 left to play on Moses Johnson's 67-yard punt return. Jamar Lewis hit Fred Person with a short pass for the two-point conversion and cut the lead to two, 10-8.

Minter fumbled on his own 42 on the next series. The Tigers drove to the 20, but Brian Lewis' field goal attempt was partially blocked.

The Bookers were called for a roughing-the-kicker penalty, giving Oscar Smith first-and-goal. Lewis got another chance from the 11 with 3:11 left, but the snap was low and holder Kelvin Bethea's hurried pass to the end zone was long.

Minter led all rushers with 153 yards on 24 carries.

Cox 21 Ocean Lakes 20

VIRGINIA BEACH - Running back David Hill sprinted 61 yards for the game-winning touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter as the Falcons won their opener.

Ocean Lakes scored on a 26-yard pass when quarterback Walter Amos connected with Henry Matthews with 3:09 remaining in the fourth quarter, but missed the game tying extra point (kick).

The Dolphins (1-1) closed the third quarter with running back Marcus Wilcox scoring on 1-yard run with seven seconds remaining tying the score at 14-14.
