NORFOLK ACADEMY FEASTS ON TURNOVERS

Norfolk Academy coach Tom York was giddy about his team's opening 1995 performance Friday afternoon.

And he had good reason to be.

The Bulldogs scored 26 points off turnovers in the first half in blasting visiting Hampton Roads Academy, 46-20, in a Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools game.

Norfolk Academy didn't allow Hampton Roads Academy (0-1 TCIS, 1-1 overall) to cross midfield in the first half in building a 33-0 lead. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 46-6 after three quarters before Hampton Roads tacked on two meaningless scores in the final frame.

Bulldog quarterback Tad Galloway completed his first two passes of the season for touchdowns, 31 yards to Russell Carter and 16 yards to Matt Law.

Hampton Roads Academy rushed for 203 yards but fumbled 13 times and lost seven. William Blaber of Hampton Roads led all rushers with 118 yards on 14 carries.

Carter, who scored three touchdowns, returned a punt 55 yards for a score.

``I was really impressed with our overall tackling and ballhandling,'' York said. ``For a first game, I thought we did well.''

The Bulldogs used 13 different runners in the game. Sharif El-Mahdi led Norfolk Academy rushers with 77 yards on seven carries.

Greenbrier Christian 38 Isle of Wight 8

ISLE OF WIGHT - The Gators (1-1) turned a pair of Charger turnovers into 13 points in the final 1:50 of the first half.

Greenbrier led, 6-0, late in the first half when Chad Dunlow sacked Isle of Wight quarterback Richard Spady, forcing a fumble at the Charger four. The Gators recovered and, one play later, John Moshier scored Greenbrier's second touchdown. After Greenbrier's Joe Curtis recovered an Isle of Wight fumble on the ensuing kickoff, the Gators executed a hook-and-lateral play, with Heath Burris catching a five-yard pass from Tommy Keiper, then tossing the ball back to Joey Harrell who went 19 yards for a score with 13 seconds remaining in the half.

Keiper threw for 148 yards, 115 of them to Burris (four catches). Harrell led Gator rushers with 95 yards, and Moshier added two rushing touchdowns.

Michael Rogers scored on a one-yard run for Isle of Wight (1-2).
