Town Manager Kenneth L. McLawhon will leave his position when his contract expires Dec. 31.
McLawhon, a former Windsor town manager, was hired in Smithfield as assistant town manager and planner in August 1990. He was appointed town manager in January 1993. McLawhon, 37, is a Richmond native.
McLawhon said Friday that he had talked with the mayor and with members of Town Council but that he had not formally turned in his resignation. ``I wanted to give them plenty of time to look for somebody else,'' McLawhon said. ``We've gotten a lot started in Smithfield, and I'd like to see it continue.''
McLawhon said that he is undecided where he will go and that he does not have a job waiting. He declined to say why he was leaving. by CNB
