One teenager was killed and another was injured when the car they were in went out of control, ran off a highway and became airborne before crashing into a utility pole Friday.
Brent Anthony Davis, 14, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the station wagon, whose name was not released, was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital aboard the Nightingale helicopter ambulance.
The accident happened just before 5 p.m. as the car was traveling west on Head of River Road near People's Road.
It appeared that the driver initially went off one side of the road and then overcorrected as he tried to pull back into the lane. The Oldsmobile then went off the other side of the highway, flipped into the air and slammed into the pole, roof first, and was wrapped around the pole. The victims were trapped inside the wreckage.
The accident remains under investigation. Police said excess speed and rain-slick roads may have contributed to the accident.
