EDUCATION: PRINCIPALS RECEIVE ASSIGNMENTS

Superintendent Richard D. Trumble recently announced the last two principal reassignments for this school year, to Hodges Manor Elementary and William E. Waters Middle School.

New Directions Center Principal Darnell Johnson was reassigned to the center earlier this year.

Margarette H. Bartlett

Hodges Manor Elementary School

Age: 55 Bartlett Previous experience: Churchland Academy Elementary principal; Olive Branch Elementary principal; fifth- and sixth-grade teacher; Title 1 reading teacher.

Educational background: Bachelor of art's degree, College of William and Mary; master's degree, Old Dominion University; advanced studies at ODU.

Goals for the school: Hodges Manor Elementary School has been a school for grades four and five since 1971. Therefore, my first goal is to work with staff, students and parents to have a positive climate for all students in grades K-5 in our school. We will work closely to develop an instructional program that uses the best of research and data to meet the needs of each student. We will provide a safe and clean school that emphasizes the importance of students coming to school every day. A strong partnership between parents and school is essential for success. An important goal of mine is to encourage parents to volunteer in our school, and to join the PTA and become active members.

Rosa M. Wells-Garris

William E. Waters Middle School

Age: 53 Wells-Garris Previous experience: Assistant principal, Woodrow Wilson High; social studies/program specialist; teacher trainer; social studies department head, I.C. Norcom High; middle school teacher.

Educational background: Bachelor's degree in French and social studies, Johnson C. Smith University; master's degree in African-American studies, Atlanta University; advanced studies, middle/high school administration, Old Dominion University.

Goals for the school: My goals for William E. Waters Middle School are varied. My immediate goal is to share with all students my expectations of hard work and seriousness of purpose. With the help of the entire Waters team, our parents and community, I want to make Waters a school that continues to be inviting; a school where all of our children look forward to coming every day; a school where teachers, administrators and the entire staff enjoy sharing with one another and their students. We want to create an atmosphere that is conducive to teaching and learning. The entire family of Waters must be challenged daily to do the very best. We must be open to new ideas and change. We all must join hands and work cooperatively for the welfare of the students.
