The submarine Tucson, above, was commissioned Saturday during a
ceremony at the Norfolk Naval Base. U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., was
the principal speaker. The ceremony was originally planned for
mid-August, but was postponed because of Hurricane Felix. Right,
crew members stand aboard the submarine, which was built at Newport
News Shipbuilding. The Tucson is the second ship of the United
States Navy to bear the name of the Arizona city. The submarine's
commanding officer is Cmdr. Duane M. Baker Jr. of Chesapeake. The
Tucson is one of the final three Los Angeles-class submarines.
During construction at Newport News Shipbuilding, the Tucson was
attacked with hammers on Good Friday 1993 by three anti-war
activists. Several activists protested outside the base Saturday.
