Philip E. Riddick, 80, of 629 Ravenwoods Drive, Chesapeake and formerly of 1213 Goff St., Norfolk, died Sept. 9, 1995, in his residence.
Mr. Riddick, a native of Gates, N.C., was a retired retail food merchant who owned and managed Riddick's Market, one of the first black-owned, full-line, self-service food markets in Norfolk, for more than 37 years. He was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk.
He is survived by Bertha L. Riddick, his wife of 59 years; two sons, Phillip L. and Benjamin L. Riddick of Chesapeake; two daughters, Beatrice R. Gay and Jacqueline R. Harris of Chicago and Phoenix, Ariz., respectively; two daughters-in-law, Gladys McCabe Riddick and Ann Brown Riddick of Chesapeake; two sons-in-law, Robert E. Gay and David Harris; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister, William Riddick of Virginia Beach and Mary Stokes of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, Burnett and Oliver Riddick, Norfolk and Baltimore; one sister-in-law, Dr. Lillie R. Lynch of Durham, N.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Calvin James at noon on Sept. 13, 1995 in First Calvary Baptist Church, 813 Henry St., Norfolk. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Riddick Funeral Service is handling funeral arrangements. The family will gather at the Chesapeake residence. ILLUSTRATION: Personal Photo
