FISHING OK, CONSIDERING SURF KICKED UP BY LUIS

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was good over the weekend, considering the rough surf generated by Hurricane Luis.

Spot fishing was steady at Kitty Hawk Pier on Saturday. Spot, scattered flounder, small puppy drum and some Spanish mackerel were landed Sunday.

Avalon Pier reported spot, a few pompano and a couple Spanish mackerel taken during the weekend.

Scattered spot were decked sporadically Saturday on Nags Head Pier. A few Spanish mackerel, keeper puppy drum and fair numbers of nice spot were caught Sunday.

Fishing was slow Saturday on Jennette's Pier, but it improved Sunday with a few spot, bluefish, sea mullet and flounder taken.

Anglers on Outer Banks Pier landed some nice spot, a 4-pound spadefish and a 5-pound puppy drum early Saturday afternoon. Fair amounts of sizable spot, a few Spanish mackerel and scattered bluefish were taken Sunday.

Seas south of Oregon Inlet were rougher, and pier fishing was slower. Rodanthe Pier reported a few spot taken.

Fishing on Avon Pier Saturday was almost impossible. Seas fell Sunday, and anglers on the pier caught a few spot, mullet and pompano.

Frisco Pier, which lost a couple pilings late last week, is closed.

A few bottom fish and some big puppy drum were beached in the surf from Corolla to Oregon Inlet, even though conditions were difficult because of a big swell.

Fishing was good around Oregon Inlet Saturday. Anglers fishing from the catwalk on the south end of the Bonner Bridge caught big puppy drum, sheepshead weighing as much as 9 pounds, several 6- to 8-pound gray trout, and lots of spot. As well, some nice keeper flounder were taken from around the rocks.

A few puppy drum were landed from the rough surf along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. A handful of tailor bluefish, sea mullet and pompano were taken along the south beach at Cape Point. Some puppy drum were beached in the Ramp 55 area late Sunday afternoon at low tide.

Trolling in the sound was fair during the weekend, with a few Spanish mackerel and tailor bluefish taken.

Headboats landed a few croaker Saturday. Headboats don't run on Sundays.

Offshore fishing was scrappy off Oregon Inlet Saturday. Only a few boats braved the big swell and were rewarded with a few dolphin and tuna. No offshore trips were attempted Sunday.

The Jo Girl caught its limit of dolphin Monday, along with a couple of tuna and a released sailfish.

Hatteras blue-water action was nil over the weekend because of rough seas. The Hatteras Blue fished offshore Monday and caught good numbers of dolphin and wahoo.

Spot fishing should be good on ocean piers along the Dare Coast as long as winds remain northeasterly.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 76 1/2 degrees Monday. by CNB
