A 36-inch water main serving Norfolk and Virginia Beach broke during a construction accident on Tuesday, causing a temporary flow of dirty water to an undetermined number of households.
The break was on Kempsville Road near Frament Avenue not far from the big water purification plant on Waterworks Road. The gush of water flooded streets and nearby private property.
Vernon Land, water quality manager for the Norfolk system, said the break occurred about 1:30 p.m. He said service was back to normal within 45 minutes. A break sent dirty water to customers, mainly in central Norfolk.
The main was ruptured while a new pipe, one of several serving Norfolk and Virginia Beach, was being laid, Land said. by CNB
