Tenneco Inc. said that Newport News Shipbuilding President William Fricks will take on the added responsibilities of CEO upon the retirement of Chairman and CEO Pat Phillips on Nov. 1. The 51-year-old Fricks has spent his entire 29-year career at Newport News Shipbuilding, where he became president and chief operating officer a year ago. Fricks has led Newport News Shipbuilding through a re-engineering effort to help the company through post-Cold War reductions in orders from the Navy. He has also pushed the shipyard into the commercial shipbuilding business. The first success in that venue was a 1994 contract to build four tankers for a Greek shipowner. by CNB
