ODU RIPS EAST CAROLINA, 7-1

Old Dominion exploited two early mistakes for goals and proceeded to shoot East Carolina's net full of holes as Carlos Vasco's hat trick paced the Monarchs to a 7-1 men's soccer victory Tuesday before a crowd of 730 at the ODU soccer stadium.

``It's wonderful that we went out and scored seven goals, but I think the whole team feels like we can play a little better,'' said Vasco, the Monarchs' leading scorer with seven goals. ``We all made mistakes tonight that we shouldn't have made.''

In the first half it was ECU making all the mistakes.

In the 13th minute, a Pirates defender deliberately kicked the ball back to keeper Kevin Smith, who handled it, resulting in an indirect free kick for the Monarchs from 8 yards. Raul Ovalle tapped the ball to Emilio Romero, who tapped it right back as Ovalle skidded a shot through Smith's legs to put ODU ahead, 1-0.

A defensive lapse by the Pirates in the 26th minute gave ODU a two-on-one, and Vasco drilled a shot over Smith for a 2-0 lead.

``Romero gave me the ball and I was wide open,'' Vasco said. ``I saw the goalie was down on the floor and I just chipped it over him.''

Vasco scored his second goal on his own rebound less than four minutes later.

With a three-goal cushion, coach Ralph Perez sent in the subs late in the half, and ECU's Bret Altheiser scored 48 seconds before intermission.

``I was not pleased at halftime. We gave up a goal just before (the break), and they had just as many shots as we did,'' Perez said. ``I think (the players) were expecting me to be all happy at halftime, up 3-1, but I really ripped them a little bit.''

The players knew their lack of concentration could let the Pirates (0-4, 0-1 CAA) back into the game.

``It gave them a little momentum going into the second (half),'' Vasco said. ``We knew we had to come out and score early, to take them out of the game and kill their spirit.''

It took 25 minutes, but ODU (3-2, 1-0) put an exclamation point on the outcome by scoring four second-half goals, two coming in the game's final 1:15.

Vasco completed his hat trick with a goal in the 70th minute. Junior Mike Moyer netted his second goal of the season with 7:36 left, and Kenneth Bowes and Darian Moore scored their first goals as Monarchs in the final 75 seconds.

VCU EDGES TRIBE: In its first year in the CAA, Virginia Commonwealth proved it can match up with the league's elite by upsetting 14th-ranked William and Mary, 1-0, in Richmond.

Rams freshman Derrick Etienne scored the game-winner on an assist from Kwaku Adu-Gyamfi, beating Tribe keeper Paul Grafer at the 18:39 mark. VCU (2-2) made the goal stand up, stifling William and Mary's powerful offense for the final 71 minutes.

Rams goalkeeper Jim Larkin faced nine shots and made four saves against the Tribe (3-1) for his second shutout of the season.

LADY MARLINS LOSE: Second-team All-American Stefanie Teter scored twice to lead Mary Washington to a 3-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in a women's soccer match in Fredericksburg.

Liz Siciliano also scored for the Eagles, who improved to 1-1. Jennifer Campioli made 13 goalkeeper saves for the Lady Marlins (2-1).

DUKE GOLFERS WIN: Duke, with a score of 875, won the Kiawah Island (S.C.) Intercollegiate Tournament by eight strokes over College of Charleston at the par-72 Osprey Point Golf Club course. Old Dominion was 14th, 40 strokes back. Danny Simmerman of North Florida was the individual champion at 212; ODU was led by Josh Cupp, who finished tied for 25th at 7-over 223.

SPARTANETTES WIN: Dianne Harris and Holly Gray tallied eight kills apiece as Norfolk State drubbed Virginia Union, 15-4, 15-6 and 15-10, to win its first volleyball match of the year. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
