DAVID A. KING JR. GENERAL CHAIRMAN FOR THE 1995 UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN

The South Hampton Roads general campaign chairman of the 1995 United Way Campaign is Norfolk native David A. King Jr.

King, whose involvement with the United Way extends back to the early '70s, oversees the United Way drive for employees and residents of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Isle of Wight.

A former Army officer and a graduate of Virginia State University and Rutgers University, he has served as the United Way's Norfolk vice chair in both 1991 and 1992 and regional vice chairman for 1993 and 1994.

A Booker T. Washington High School graduate, King first became involved with the organization in the early '70s when he was a volunteer on the city level. He renewed his involvement in the early '90s and in the interim served as a member of the board of directors of the Hunton YMCA, a United Way agency.

Working with the United Way, King says, is his way to contribute to the community.

``When you work day in and day out, you don't get to do that,'' King said.

The 1995 campaign was kicked off Sept. 7 with the fourth annual Day of Caring. The campaign will continue until Nov. 30. Funds raised through the campaign support 69 local United Way-certified agencies and more then 375 other human service agencies in Hampton Roads.
