JOHN C. BIAS SR.

John Calvin Bias Sr., of the 100 block of Bias Shore, died Sept. 10, 1995, in Chesapeake General Hospital.

He was the son of the late John Henry Bias, the second president of Elizabeth City State College, and Frances Lane Bias. He was a native of Elizabeth City, N.C. He received his early education from the Raleigh Public Schools. His high school education was completed at State Normal School. He received his Bachelor's from Howard University, and his Master's and Professional Diploma from Columbia Teachers College. He did further study at Morgan's College in Baltimore, A&T State College in Greensboro, and American University in Washington, D.C.

He met and married Miss Carolyn Priscilla Shorter of Washington, D.C. They were blessed with two sons, John Calvin Jr., and Francis Lane. Other survivors include three sisters, Bernice Brandon of Baltimore, and Elizabeth B. Cofield and Lillian B. Abron of Raleigh; seven grandsons; 11 great-grandchildren; five nieces; 11 nephews; one sister-in-law, Annette Shorter Brown of Washington, D.C.; and one great-niece.

The Rosary will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kill Devil Hills, N.C. It will be followed by Mass at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in New Oak Grove Cemetery, Elizabeth City, at 1 p.m. The wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Corner Stone Community Life Center Chapel, Elizabeth City. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Holly Redeemer Building Fund, Kill Devil Hills, or John C. Bias Sr. Scholarship Fund, Elizabeth City State University. Walson Funeral Service, Elizabeth City, in charge.
