NEW POLICE BUILDING

Police operations in South Norfolk moved across the street Thursday to a newly remodeled building at the corner of Liberty and 20th streets.

The Second Precinct building - formerly a courthouse - will house the South Norfolk community policing program, crime prevention and other police services.

``Our objective is not to raise statistics as far as arrests are concerned,'' Police Chief Ian Shipley Jr. said. ``But to lower statistics as far as crime is concerned.''

The new Second Precinct, originally built in 1970 as a South Norfolk municipal center, will house an additional eight officers now. Seven more from the police academy will also be assigned there.

The remodeled building and addition of officers is part of efforts to revitalize the South Norfolk area.

The precinct will be commanded by Capt. Lloyd M. Goodbread Jr. by CNB
