Top-ranked Deep Creek and No. 2 Indian River return to action tonight after a week off, but the big news in high school football is the weather. The forecast is for clear skies after two Friday nights of rain that narrowed the competitive balance and may have contributed to several upsets.
The key games today and tonight are in the private ranks and the Beach District.
Norfolk Academy plays host to Atlantic Shores at 4:30 p.m. in a matchup of private school powers. Both teams were in the Colonial Football Association last year, but Atlantic Shores was left without a league this season when the other four teams joined with Hampton Roads Academy to offer a football championship in the Tidewater Conference.
In the Beach District tonight, First Colonial visits Kempsville and Bayside is host to Green Run.
The First Colonial-Kempsville winner will emerge as a legitimate championship threat. The Patriots took a step in that direction last week when they beat Bayside, 16-10, on the strength of three Jesse Harris field goals.
The Marlins probably need to upset No. 3 Green Run to stay in the race. The Stallions opened last week with a 39-6 rout of Maury.
