I applaud the Virginia school system for implementing the ``contract system.'' Most parents try to take responsibility for their children, but many do not. Our children have the right to learn in an atmosphere that is free from distracting misbehavior, and our teachers deserve to be more than glorified baby sitters.
For responsible parents, this contract will have no impact; but for those who would prefer to ``leave it to the school officials,'' this should be a jolt to reality!
It is time to get our schools back into the learning mode so we can turn out well-educated, well-rounded students, prepared to move on to higher-learning institutions and then on to serve society as a whole.
When teachers are freed from being full-time disciplinarians to actually putting time in creating productive learning environments, all of society wins.
It is a shame that parental responsibility must be legislated, but if it comes to that for the greater good, then so be it! Contracts are certainly a step in the right direction.
Again, I applaud!
