HOW TO SAVE LIVES ON THE BAY BRIDGE

``Two die in crash on Bay bridge'' (MetroNews headline, Sept. 3).

Apparently a Honda Accord station wagon southbound veered into the northbound lane slamming head on into a Nissan Maxima. In addition to the deaths of both drivers, there were two passengers in the Accord who were seriously hurt; others in the Nissan escaped with minor injuries.

Is it not time to do something about this dreadful carnage on the Bay bridge? As a regular traveler on the Lucius Kellam Jr. Bay Bridge-Tunnel, an engineering feat of significant moment for the Eastern Shore, I want some additional protection for all who transit this span. Now is the time! We cannot wait for new construction.

What to do? I am not a traffic engineer, but for starters: How about a no-passing zone from toll booth to toll booth; this and maximum/minimum speed limits should be strictly and effectively enforced. How about a ``simple'' barrier. There must be technology for this - if necessary, ask for help from NASA. Even regular lane-separation markers would help.

Those who share my concern will, I am sure, have some better ideas. Let the authorities hear from you. It is time we cut our grievous losses on this vital connection to points south. If we save one life, the above action will be worth any inconvenience, including economic.
