Patsy Reed reaffirmed the University of North Carolina at Asheville's mission as a liberal arts school during a formal ceremony making her chancellor.
About 1,800 people attended the outdoor ceremony Friday, with UNC President C.D. Spangler presiding.
During her speech, Reed announced that UNCA's endowment for scholarships will increase by more than $1 million because of two anonymous donations.
She also told the crowd that creativity is a hallmark of liberal arts education.
``The habits of creative thinking which liberal education fosters are, I believe, crucial to the future of this country and this globe,'' she said.
Reed said UNCA's challenge is to make the state and nation understand the meaning and relevance of a liberal arts education.
Reed, 58, is UNCA's fourth chancellor. Prior to her appointment here, the former research chemist served as interim president in 1993-94 and vice president for academic affairs in 1987-93 at Northern Arizona University. ILLUSTRATION: ASSOCIATED PRESS
