John C. Salvi III, accused of killing two women in attacks on a pair of abortion clinics last year will use an insanity defense, according to papers filed Friday by his lawyer.
Salvi pleaded innocent to charges of murder but has refused to discuss the case with his lawyers. He has repeatedly said he is competent and wants the death penalty if he is convicted.
Judge Barbara Dortch-Okara ruled in August that Salvi was competent to stand trial for the Dec. 30 killings.
Salvi was arrested the following day in Norfolk after allegedly firing on Hillcrest Clinic. No one was injured in that shooting. by CNB
