Following a script strikingly similar to a year ago, Norfolk Academy started fast and finished strong en route to a 28-15 victory over Atlantic Shores in a meeting of unbeaten private-school powers Friday afternoon.
Academy (2-0) scored the first 13 points, watched the visiting Seahawks (2-1) rally before intermission, then put them away with 15 third-quarter points.
Last season, Norfolk Academy scored the first 13 points of the game, saw Atlantic Shores rally to within one, 13-12, then pulled away for a 32-20 win.
This time, the Bulldogs took a 13-0 lead after the first period thanks to a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tad Galloway to halfback Russell Carter and a 27-yard pass from Galloway to Hunter Sims.
Carter set up the first touchdown with an interception.
Carter said he knew Galloway was going to have a good game. In two games, Galloway has only thrown the ball four times, but he has completed all of his passes for touchdowns.
``Tad did a great job in practice this week,'' Carter said. ``I wasn't worried about him at all.''
The Seahawks gave Norfolk Academy something to be worried about in the second period when they cut the deficit to 13-7 on an 8-yard touchdown run by B.J. Skipper with 4:29 remaining.
In the third quarter, Bulldog running backs Drew McKnight and Carter rumbled through the Atlantic Shores defense.
McKnight finished with 93 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries while Carter added 53 yards and a TD on 11 attempts.
``Our offensive line wore them down in the first half,'' McKnight said. ``In the second half, we were getting 4 to 5 yards every pop. Our line overpowered their line.''
Bulldog head coach Tom York was attending the funeral of a friend and was not present at the game. Bob Needham, the J.V. head coach, was the interim coach.
York's words of wisdom during the week were not lost on Carter.
``Mr. York wasn't here, but he told us to run it straight up the middle,'' the 5-foot-10, 172-pounder said. ``Through experience (last year), we knew they tend to wear out in the fourth quarter.''
Defensively, Norfolk Academy end Shawn Tobias had seven tackles and three quarterback sacks. by CNB
