DEEP CREEK, DYER BLOW PAST WILSON, 42-0

CHESAPEAKE - Opening defense of its Southeastern District championship, Deep Creek exploded for a 42-0 victory at home Friday night against Wilson behind four touchdown runs from fullback Deon Dyer.

Dyer racked up his four scores in a span of about 15 minutes and was rewarded with a rest on the bench with five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

``The way our line blocked it was easy,'' said the 6-foot, 240-pound senior. But it was vintage Dyer that produced his first score. On second-and-one at the Wilson 10, Dyer was sent up the middle to get a first down. He was stopped, made a 180-degree turn and skirted the left end for the touchdown.

Dyer, who has six touchdowns in two games, gained 103 yards in only 10 carries. His other scores came on two 5-yard runs and an 8-yard scamper.

The Hornets (1-0 Southeastern, 2-0 overall) unveiled a new weapon in halfback Angelo Sykes, who broke away for a 30-yard touchdown and gained 36 yards in seven carries.

``We knew he was going to be a good one last year,'' said Deep Creek coach Jerry Carter. ``But he had a neck jam that slowed him down.

``He's going to be an excellent breakaway runner and that is going to keep people from packing the line of scrimmage to stop Deon.''

Deep Creek's other touchdown came on a 45-yard run by junior halfback Teray Frost.

The unbeaten Hornets, No. 1 ranked in South Hampton Roads, shut down Wilson's running game, yielding only 16 yards rushing. Wilson quarterback Terrence Winston, one of the area's better passers, threw for 144 yards but managed to complete only nine of 27 passes.

Phillip James had four catches for 84 yards for Wilson (0-1, 0-3).

There was speculation that this game would end the long rivalry between the two schools since Wilson is moving into the Eastern District next year. The series now stands at 21-6-2 in Wilson's favor. But Deep Creek principal Nat Hardee said he expected the two schools will continue playing.

Western Branch 20 Norcom 13

PORTSMOUTH - Shyrone Stith ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns to lead fourth-ranked Western Branch, leaving the Greyhounds at 0-2 for the first time since 1987.

Stith, who served a one-game suspension last week after being ejected from the final game of the 1994 season, opened the scoring with a six-yard run in the first quarter, then broke a 13-13 tie with a 51-yard scoring jaunt with 10:54 remaining in the Southeastern District game for the No. 4 Bruins (1-0, 2-0).

Norcom had rallied from a 13-0 deficit. The Greyhounds (0-2, 0-2) got their first score on the last play of the first half when quarterback Michael Ponds dropped back to pass, raced toward the line of scrimmage then lofted a 25-yard pass to a wide-open Lutrell Chavis in the end zone.

Norcom dominated the third quarter, controlling the ball for 14 minutes and running 20 plays to Western Branch's two. The Greyhounds got the tying touchdown with 20 seconds left in the period when Ponds ran in from 15 yards out. But a bad snap foiled the Greyhounds' extra point attempt.

Green Run 37 Bayside 0

VIRGINIA BEACH - Larry Jordan rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown on only six carries for the third-ranked Stallions (1-0 Beach, 2-0).

Jordan had a spectacular, 73-yard score on a second quarter draw and nearly repeated the feat on the first play of the third period before being dropped at the Bayside 3.

Green Run exploded for 17 second-quarter points after taking a 7-0 advantage in the first on Cedric Warren's 21-yard touchdown run. In the second, Ben Root hauled in an 11-yard scoring strike from Edward Cuffee and Jermaine Maull nailed a 27-yard field goal before Jordan's dash up the middle.

Lanier Washington made it 30-0 when he returned a punt 51 yards midway through the third quarter and Plaxico Burress finished things with a 44-yard touchdown reception from Cuffee - who was 6-of-15 for 124 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Stallions finished with a 343-40 total offensive yard advantage, as the Green Run defense held Bayside (0-2, 0-2) to minus five yards rushing.

Salem 30 Kellam 14

VIRGINIA BEACH - The Knights, who snapped a 25-game losing streak last week, took a 7-0 lead when Tim Walston scored on a 19-yard run, but after that it was all Salem in the Beach District opener for both teams.

The Sun Devils (1-0, 1-1) scored 30 unanswered points to remove any hopes of a Kellam winning streak. Curtis Sanders gave Salem a 10-7 halftime lead when he scored on a one-yard run and Richard Holland jump-started the Sun Devils in the third period by taking the second-half kickoff back 89 yards for a touchdown.

A 13-yard run by Luke Etheridge and a 14-yard jaunt by Dennis Freeman closed out the scoring for Salem.

The Sun Devils piled up 220 yards rushing. Sanders had 67 yards on nine carries and Reggie Murphy and Freeman gained 54 yards apiece on nine and six carries, respectively.

Walston threw for 107 yards and a touchdown for Kellam (0-1, 1-1).

Granby 26 Cox 0

NORFOLK - Quarterback Anthony King scored a touchdown and threw for another as the Comets (2-1) blanked the Falcons (1-1) at Chittum Field.

King put Granby on the board on the first play of the second quarter with an 83-yard dash down the left sideline.

A little more than a minute later, D.J. Alexander picked off a Bart Dexter pass and returned it 40 yards to give the Comets a 14-0 lead.

With 5:12 to remaining in the half, Alex Sunkins dove into the end zone to cap a four-play 72-yard drive. Sunkins gained 133 yards.

King, who finished with 199 yards of total offense, hooked up with Joe Bryant on a 22-yard TD pass for the Comets' final score with 5:52 to go in the third quarter.

The Falcons managed only 72 yards of total offense and threatened late in the fourth quarter when Brian Berube blocked a Comet punt for a Cox first down at the Granby 17.

Indian River 47 Maury 6

NORFOLK - The second-ranked Braves (2-0) dominated at Harbor Park despite suffering 125 yards worth of penalties.

Indian River's powerful rushing game dominated early as Michael Joyner streaked 45 yards from the line of scrimmage for an opening touchdown. Brandon Lawrence connected the first of his three extra points for a 7-0 margin.

The Braves attacked from all over the field. Quarterback James Boyd registered two rushing touchdowns, then found Anthony Cason for a 24-yard touchdown reception and Lance Bishop for a 27-yard scoring completion.

``I feel like the scoring was pretty well spread out,'' Indian River coach Robert Parker said. ``We really executed in the first half.''

Jeremiah Bell picked up a William Black fumble and raced 62 yards for the lone score for the Commodores (0-3).

Sam Hardy recovered a fumble and rushed 27 yards for a Braves touchdown and Cason punched in from the 1 to round out the scoring. Boyd passed for 82 yards and rushed for 85 yards.

Norview 21 Ocean Lakes 20

VIRGINIA BEACH - The Pilots built a 21-7 lead thanks to their special teams and Ocean Lakes' penalties, then held on as the Dolphins missed an extra point attempt with seven seconds remaining.

Joe Jordan ran back a punt 36 yards for a touchdown and Shanardo Goodhope scored on a 1-yard run as Norview (1-2) led, 14-0, after a quarter.

The Pilots then marched 69 yards on 17 plays, aided by two pass interference penalties, following the second half kickoff. Larry Austin's 5-yard touchdown run capped the drive.

Quarterback Walter Amos then rallied the Dolphins (1-2), scoring on a 6-yard run with 9:02 to go, and connecting with Lavoy Harrell on a 21-yard Hail Mary with seven seconds left. But kicker Frank Knox was wide right on the conversion.
