It was January 1987 when the girls basketball game between Manor and
Churchland was stopped and teammates mobbed Samantha Thompson,
center, after she became the first Mustangs girl player since Anita
Cooper, five years earlier, to score 1,000 points. Thompson went on
to set a school scoring record and become the third all-time leading
girls scorer in Portsmouth schools.
