Mrs. Alice Thomas McKenzie, 79, of Norfolk, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 1995, at Sentara Leigh Hospital.
She was a graduate of Catholic University, receiving her R.N. and B.S.M. She was author of a text book manual that was used for many years as a teaching adjunct.
During World War II she joined the Army Nurses Corp, retaining the rank of captain. Most of her service was in the Pacific, serving in Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia. She was a staff nurse and accompanied General Douglas McArthur; set up a hospital in the Philippines upon his ``return.''
After the war, she was employed as a supervisor at the VA Hospital in Washington, a position she held for many years.
She was born at Fire Island and was preceded in death by her parents, Capt. and Mrs. George Thomas, a lighthouse keeper for the U.S. Coast Guard, and her sister, Lucy Thomas of of New Jersey. She was the widow of Arthur R. McKenzie Jr. of Norfolk.
Survivors include her stepdaughter and husband, Lily and David Dwyer; granddaughter, Sunny Dwyer and grandson, L. Boyd Black of Norfolk; sisters-in-law, Anna McKenzie and Helen Wilson of Newport News, Alma Wood and her husband, Dr. James E. Wood Jr. of Waco, Texas and their son, James E. Wood III of Arlington.
Mrs. McKenzie was a Catholic, and a memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, 1995 in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Please omit floral tributes, memorials may be made to Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk.
