VIRGINIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY RACES, 1995 WHERE TO START

Seven Tuesdays from today - Nov. 7 - is Election Day. Voters will decide who fills all 140 seats in the Virginia General Assembly.

On the line, however, are not just individual seats representing individual districts. On the line is control of the legislature.

Democrats, after decades of at times unchallenged control of the assembly, are three seats away from losing their majority in the House of Delegates and three seats away from losing their majority in the Senate. They are possibly six seats away from losing their power to rein in what they consider Gov. George Allen's gutting of good and necessary programs and policies of state gov-ern-ment, particularly regarding education and the environment.

Governor Allen, a Republican, is possibly six seats away from a Republican majority in the legislature that would be far more friendly toward his philosophy - that less government means more power, money and choice to the citizens and businesses of the commonwealth - than a Democratic majority would be.

Who's running for assembly seats from around here? In coming weeks you will be hearing their names increasingly often, raised in praise and in vain. Name recognition should not be enough to elect anybody to office. Knowing candidates' names, home districts and, in this year of a potential turnover of control, party affiliation (if any) is only a start. But that's where we will start, with the list below of the candidates for the House and Senate seats representing South Hampton Roads. Incumbents are indicated by *.
