Inshore fishing was good along the Outer Banks during the weekend. Ocean piers along the northern beaches reported plenty of spot landed.
Spot, croaker and sea mullet were caught Saturday on Kitty Hawk Pier. Spot fishing was excellent Sunday afternoon, with big fish landed two at a time.
Big spot, pompano, and croaker weighing more than two pounds were caught from Avalon Pier throughout the weekend.
Nags Head Pier reported sea mullet, spot, flounder and a few speckled trout taken Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, Spanish mackerel and bluefish were landed from the end of the pier during the evenings.
Anglers on Jennette's Pier caught large spot, sea mullet, speckled trout and nice-sized pompano. An 8-pound cobia was taken from the pier on a jigger Sunday afternoon, and some large Spanish mackerel were landed from the end of the pier just before dark.
Pompano, good numbers of spot and drum weighing 4 pounds and 8-pounds 2-ounces were caught from Outer Banks Pier Saturday. Spanish mackerel, bluefish, spot and pompano weighing as much as 2-pounds 5-ounces were landed Sunday. The best bluefish and Spanish mackerel action was during the afternoon.
Pier fishing on the northern beaches continued at a steady rate Monday, with spot taken in most locations two at a time and bluefish caught early in the morning.
South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported spot and nice croaker taken during the weekend. Puppy drum, bluefish and a few pompano were landed on Avon Pier. Frisco Pier anglers caught small bluefish, croaker and a few speckled trout Saturday, and lots of spot Sunday.
Surfishermen caught spot, sea mullet and pompano from deeper sloughs along the northern beaches Saturday. Action slowed Sunday due to a hard running northerly tide.
Anglers fishing from the catwalk on the Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet caught spot and croaker. Some nice flounder were taken from the revetment, and bluefish and small bottom fish from the shore on the north side of the inlet.
Bluefish, puppy drum, spot and sea mullet were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.
A good run of Spanish mackerel developed late Friday at Cape Point. Puppy drum, mullet, and small bluefish were beached Saturday and Sunday.
Anglers fishing the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet caught croaker, sea mullet, small bluefish, pompano and spot.
The Hatteras Village Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament was held during the weekend. The top team was the Outer Banks Sportfishers of Nags Head, with a two-day catch of 58 fish scoring 166 points. The Sand Bunnies of Nags Head captured the all-female team honor with 16 fish and 44 points.
Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was excellent Sunday, with tailor blues plentiful. Fair numbers of nice Spanish mackerel also were taken. Bluefish were plentiful in the area again Monday. The best action was in the main channel along the north side of the inlet.
A few tuna were landed and one billfish was released by the few boats that went big game fishing off Oregon Inlet Saturday. Fishing improved a little Sunday, with a few dolphin, scattered tuna and some wahoo landed. A blue marlin was released by the Right Hook.
Wahoo fishing off Hatteras was good Saturday. Additionally, a few tuna and small dolphin were taken. Fair numbers of dolphin and wahoo were landed Sunday. A few tuna appeared in catches. Sailfish were released by the Citation and the Marlin Mania.
Spot fishing should remain good on ocean piers as long as winds remain onshore and the water stays a little murky.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 75 degrees Monday. by CNB
