HERE'S OUR NEW LINEUP IN SPORTS NEWS

With the fall season fully underway, it seems a good time to introduce some of the folks who bring Sports News to you every day.

Starting today, the Sports department is moving to a slightly different organizational structure, one directed by a leadership team. The Pilot newsroom began moving to a team-based management system about three years ago.

Here's the lineup: Chic Riebel shapes our coverage of high school and community sports; Carl Fincke oversees our staff-written college and pro sports report; Joe Garvey supervises our team of desk editors; and Bob Fleming takes on the newly created position of section editor to bring it all together.

Chic, 46, began his newspaper career as a part-time editorial assistant with the Pilot in 1972 while stationed in Norfolk with the U.S. Navy. He became a full-time writer in 1974, covering high school and college sports.

In 1979, he left to become the sports editor of the Delaware County (Pa.) Daily Times.

Chic returned to the Pilot as sports editor in June 1992 and helped establish the section as one that emphasizes Hampton Roads, showcasing Virginia colleges and area high schools and more fully encompassing women's sports. He is married to Connie and is the father of Krissy, 21; and Derek, 18.

Carl, 41, who joined the Pilot in 1979, is a key player in getting the section out every day. Until now he's been assistant sports editor, which means he's been working with writers on stories and ideas while handling about 8,000 other things that come up every day in sports. Carl came to us from the Tallahassee Democrat and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina. He is married to Susan and is paternal figure to two St. Bernard's.

The third newsroom leader critical to getting Sports News to you every day is Joe, leader of the sports copy desk. Joe's team brings it all together at night - almost always against the clock of deadline. Joe couldn't do it without his teammates - Dave Paton, Mike Workman, Dan Janke, Dave Lewis, Mike Flanagan, Bill ``Breeze'' Moore, Kevin Doepp, Rea Farmer and Lewis Krauskopf.

Joe, 39, is a Penn State grad who has worked for the Pilot for eight years. He is married to Ann Marie and is the father of Cameron, 14 months, and Drew, who turns 6 next week.

Bob, 38, our newest addition, brings to his job a longtime love of sports, 12 years experience in daily newspapers and a desire to perfect his knuckleball.

He has worked at the Pilot since February 1989, first as an editor in business news and later on the desk that designs the pages of the paper. A Louisiana native, Bob first worked in sports when he was sports editor at the LSU student daily newspaper. Bob is married to Paige and has two children: Mary, 11, and Emmett, 4. ILLUSTRATION: Chic
