VERNIE A. GRAY SR.

Vernie Ashby Gray Sr., 88, of the 600 block of Walnut St., died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 1995.

He was a native of Southampton County and was the son of the late C.A. and Clara Johnson Gray. He was the widower of Bessie Powell Gray and was retired as owner and operator of Gray's Bait and Tackle Shop in Franklin. He was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church, the Woodemen of the World and a long-time member of the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department, as well as an air raid warden in Franklin during World War II.

He is survived by two daughters, Jean Leggett of Suffolk, and Joy Gray of Fayetteville, Pa.; two sons, Vernie A. Gray Jr. and Mitchell P. Gray, both of Franklin; four sisters, Nellie Savage of Bronx, N.Y., Gladys Gilmore of Chester, Pa., Rubye Gray and Lina Harcum, both of Franklin; one brother, Aubrey C. Gray of Norfolk; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Poplar Spring Cemetery by the Rev. L.T. Wilkins. The family will receive friends at the home of Mitchell Gray, 601 Walnut St. Wright Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
