LEADERS JOIN TO PROMOTE EASTERN N.C. ISSUES, RAISE FUNDS FOR ECU

Business leaders, Albemarle-area educators and local politicos joined a group of about 50 state government leaders on the golf course and tennis courts at the Greenville Country Club as part of a two-day Legislative Appreciation Day, which began Wednesday and will continue today, designed to promote eastern North Carolina issues.

The event, a brainchild of Sen. Ed Warren, a Pitt County Democrat, began about 10 years ago to promote East Carolina University and its medical school and to raise money for scholarships.

Since then, the biennial event has grown - this year its

sponsors hope to raise up to $10,000 in scholarships for ECU and for community colleges in Beaufort, Martin, Pitt and Lenoir counties.

``As a senator, I think I am supposed to promote the area,'' said Warren. ``I saw an opportunity to have the leadership of the state come to the area and for those of us in eastern North Carolina to promote what we have here.''

Democratic and Republican government and business leaders were treated to a reception at ECU Chancellor Richard Eakin's home on Wednesday night. And today about 120 entrants in golf tournaments will vie for cash awards and prizes.

Senate leader Marc Basnight, a Dare County Democrat, House Majority Leader N. Leo Daughtry, a Johnston County Republican, and Michael Hooker, new Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, are among the state's leaders scheduled to attend one or more of the events, Warren said.

Eakin said Wednesday that all of eastern North Carolina stands to benefit from the contacts made.

``The benefit of this is that we have the opportunity to meet these people one on one,'' he said. ``It makes for a much easier relationship, not only for East Carolina University but for eastern North Carolina as well.'' sh: :r: not found H1BGPAR21 B 0921BYLAYOUT comheadline headline BGPAR212BB 0921BYroncomstart byline
