Charges against a Norfolk man suspected of fatally shooting 25-year-old Havel Johnson on Saturday morning were upgraded on Tuesday to murder and use of a firearm, police spokesman Larry Hill said.
Donnell Byrd, 22, of the 7400 block of Sewells Point Road, turned himself in at the Police Operations Center Tuesday night, Hill said.
Police had been searching for Byrd since the shooting. Warrants were on file for malicious wounding and use of a firearm.
Hill said the shooting occurred after a confrontation between the two men and Johnson's wife. Byrd, Hill said, was the wife's ex-boyfriend. Hill did not release the woman's full name.
Byrd was with the woman in the 7400 block of Gregory Drive when Johnson approached on a moped. He and Byrd argued. Byrd then allegedly fired several shots, striking Johnson in the back, Hill said.
Police responded about 4:40 a.m. They found Johnson, of the 3200 block of Kimball Terrace, lying in the street.
He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died at 2:50 p.m. from multiple gunshot wounds.
