DISCOVER NEW WORLD AT CENTER FOR ARTS

WHEN THIS column started up, I decided to bravely tackle many areas of interest to make all my readers happy.

But y'know, I never did have the guts to try something really artsy because art is a very personal subject. I probably think of art as something totally different than the next person, and it would take me the rest of my life to cover everyone's views.

Well, on Tuesday I decided that I'd ignored the topic long enough and I went down to the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts.

And boy, I found a lot more than I expected.

I had been there once before to see a photography exhibit, but I just went, saw and left. This time I scrounged around for as much info as I could get. And believe it or not, the next exhibit is titled ``Is it Art?''

The interactive exhibit presents 15 artists with works in the media of painting, sculpture and photography with ``interactive text modules'' surrounding each piece to explain its relevance and impact.

The opening reception is public on Sunday from 2 until 5 p.m.

The center also sponsors art classes. They range from drawing and ceramics to photography and raku. It also has an art camp during the summer for children and younger teens. They exhibit some of the work by these students in a room off to the right of the entrance. I tell you, it's the happiest place on earth.

The new schedule will be out in a week, so get off your duff and take a class.

The next musical event will be Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. Margarita Escarpa, a classical guitar player from Spain, will perform. The concert is being presented by the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society. Admission is $8, but if you like guitar, it's supposed to be awesome.

The Virginia Beach Center for the Arts is located at 2200 Parks Ave. There is not a charge for the art exhibit, although donations are appreciated. The general information number is 425-0000. MEMO: Alicia Luma is a homeschooled high school junior. Her column appears
