Richard J. Keilty, vice president and general sales manager at Houston television station KHOU, has been named to replace Lee H. Salzberger as vice president and general manager of ABC affiliate WVEC.
Keilty is no stranger to Hampton Roads, having worked in sales at Norfolk-based WVEC in the 1980s.
The appointment was announced Thursday in Dallas by the A.H. Belo Corp., owner and operator of both stations.
Belo also announced that Salzberger, who has a 30-year career with Belo, will become senior vice president-administration for the company's broadcast division. Belo operates network affiliates in Dallas; Houston; Seattle; Sacramento, Calif.; New Orleans; and Tulsa, in addition to the ABC affiliate in Hampton Roads.
In announcing that Keilty would get the general manager's job in Hampton Roads, Jim Moroney III - Belo's executive vice president of the company's TV station group - said, ``He is ready for the job. He has done an outstanding job in leading the sales department at KHOU to record levels.''
Before moving to Houston, Keilty was general sales manager at WVEC for five years starting in 1983. He also has worked at stations in Providence, R.I.; and Columbus, Ohio.
Salzberger was hailed as ``an extraordinarily talented broadcast executive'' by Ward L. Huey Jr., vice chairman and president of Belo's broadcast division. Salzberger first worked for Belo as a reporter with WFAA in Dallas.
He became WVEC's general manager in 1991. On his watch, Channel 13 has dominated the local news ratings at 5 and 6 p.m. In his 30 years with Belo, Salzberger has worked at four of the company's stations. by CNB
