In these days of the global economy, foreign policy could create a new job for you or cause you to lose the one you've got.
Starting next month, Hampton Roads residents will have an opportunity to grapple with the rapid changes taking place in today's world, weigh national priorities and draw conclusions about what directions U.S. policy should take in the post-Cold War era.
A four-part discussion series, ``Choices for the 21st Century,'' will be held at the Central Library in Virginia Beach.
The two-hour sessions will be led by Michael Thro, a humanities professor at the Virginia Beach campus of Tidewater Community College.
The sessions will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5, Oct. 12, Oct. 26 and Nov. 9. They are free and open to the public.
Participants will be encouraged to verbalize the values that are important to them personally and then translate those values into the foreign policy arena. In particular, they will explore the search for peace in an era of multiple conflicts and seek out ways to respond to worldwide environmental threats.
The group's conclusions will be summarized, combined with those of 10 similar groups meeting around the state, and sent to members of the Virginia congressional delegation.
The project is administered by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy in conjunction with Brown University.
The discussion group is limited to 40 participants; preregistration is required. A reading guide for participants is available in advance of the sessions.
