On Sept. 7, the fourth annual ``Day of Caring'' in South Hampton Roads demonstrated once again that our community's greatest strength lies in its people.
On loan from 119 area companies, more than 2,000 volunteers, including some 600 active-duty military, spent the day painting buildings, landscaping playgrounds, working with children, sorting donated food and clothing, and doing much, much more.
During this event, which marked the official kick-off for the annual United Way campaign in South Hampton Roads, people from all corners of the work force put down their usual tools of trade to volunteer at 107 local charities, contributing a part of themselves to make life better for others.
We are grateful to the many volunteer workers and to the hundreds of companies that sponsored this event with cash and in-kind contributions. The work they accomplished proved what a difference a day can make when our community is ``United.''
