CECIL W. JOHNSON

The Honorable Judge Cecil William Johnson, 64, of the 800 block of Nottingham Road, died Thursday Sept. 21, 1995, at home with his family.

He was born in Newport News, and was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth. He was the widower of the late Clara Evans Johnson and son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Johnson Sr.

Judge Johnson was retired from the Portsmouth Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1947 and the College of William and Mary in 1951 with a degree in Economics. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe from 1952 to 1954. He then graduated from the Marshall Wythe School of Law at William and Mary in 1956 and was in private practice in Portsmouth until 1964. He served as clerk of the Husting Court (now Circuit Court) from 1964 until 1973, at which time he was appointed judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Judge Johnson was a former secretary of the electoral board from 1960 to 1964 and a lifetime member of the Virginia State Bar Association and the Portsmouth Bar Association. He was a 32 degree Mason and a member of Glebe Episcopal Church. He was a member and past president of the Cosmopolitan Club. In 1960 he became a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 82 and was exalted ruler in 1971-1972.

Survived by his children and sons-in-law, Karen Johnson Furman and John, Susan and David Baker, all of Portsmouth; Cecilia and Bruce Harlow Sr. of Virginia Beach; sister-in-law, Lois Evans of Chesapeake; one brother, Charles R. Johnson Jr. of Suffolk; one sister, Joyce Lash of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Madison Furman, Meredith, Annalee and Bruce Harlow Jr.; and many other relatives and friends. He was the perfect father and trusted friend and leaves us a legacy of integrity, fairness, and love.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday Sept. 25, 1995, in Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, by Rev. Terry Riddle. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at his home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the HER (Help and Emergency Response) Shelter, P.O.
