A 10-year-old girl was in stable condition Friday after being shot, apparently by accident, police said.
Candra King was being treated in the intensive care unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk for a gunshot wound to the face.
The shooting occurred about 4 p.m. Thursday at the King home in the 6100 block of Bradford Drive.
Initially, detectives R.L. Ross and J.L. Williams were told by a 17-year-old boy that the girl was the victim of a drive-by shooting. He described the suspect vehicle.
But when Ross and Williams checked with dispatchers, they were told that the initial call for help indicated that there had been an accidental shooting.
After further questioning, the 17-year-old admitted that the shooting had occurred when he was showing a .32-caliber handgun to the girl and it discharged accidentally.
The teenager showed police where he had hidden the gun. He said he fabricated the story of the drive-by shooting out of fear after friends told him he would get in trouble for the accident.
Police have not filed any charges, but the case remains under investigation.
The teenager is not related to the victim.
