GIRL, 9, AND 2 DRIVERS HURT IN SUFFOLK CRASH INVOLVING SCHOOL BUS

A 9-year-old girl was only slightly hurt, but two other people were seriously injured Friday morning in a multi-vehicle wreck that included a school bus.

The accident occurred about 8:15 a.m. in the 7000 block of Whaleyville Blvd.

Police said Hartwell Scarborough Jr. of Windsor, N.C., was heading south when the 1982 Ford Grenada he was driving drifted onto the shoulder of the road.

Scarborough apparently over-corrected, and turned toward oncoming traffic in the southbound lane.

The Grenada first sideswiped a school bus and then slammed head- on into a 1983 Datsun station wagon driven by Gary Eugene Owen, of Windsor, Va.

Owen's car was then struck from behind by a 1989 Chrysler driven by Ann Turner of the 5600 block of Trafalgar Arch in Portsmouth.

Only one of the 12 students on the bus was hurt.

Ebony Jones of Middle Springs Road was taken to Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Owen was airlifted from the scene by the Nightingale helicopter ambulance and taken to the Trauma Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Scarborough was first taken to Obici and later also airlifted by Nightingale to Norfolk General, where he was in surgery Friday night.

His condition was not available.

The accident blocked traffic for two hours and created a two-mile backup.

The accident remained under investigation Friday, and no charges had been filed.
