SHIFTING WINDSBLOW NO ILL ON FRIDAY'S FISHING

Bottom fishing was good on piers along the northern beaches Friday, even though winds had shifted to a southerly direction.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported good spot fishing throughout the afternoon. Tailor bluefish, puppy drum and a few nice speckled trout also were taken.

A few croaker and tailor bluefish were landed on Avalon Pier. Some undersized puppy drum also were released there.

Good numbers of spot, some tailor bluefish and a 2- to 3-pound speckled trout were caught from Nags Head Pier during the morning. Several pompano were landed, including a 2.75-pounder by Marvin Moore of Weaverville, N.C.

Jennette's Pier reported spot landed two at a time throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught some speckled trout, pompano, bluefish and lots of small black drum.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier anglers landed scattered tailor blues, sea mullet and a few Spanish mackerel. Avon Pier reported generally slow fishing. Grassy conditions kept action to a minimum on Frisco Pier, with only a few tailor blues landed.

A few tailor bluefish and a mixture of small bottom fish were landed in the surf from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Some speckled trout were beached during the morning from sloughs north of Kitty Hawk and Avalon Piers.

Bluefish were plentiful along the north shore of Oregon Inlet Friday. Croaker, pigfish, small blues and some keeper flounder were taken on mullet on the inlet's south side.

Puppy drum and tailor bluefish were landed by surfcasters from Rodnanthe to Buxton. The best bluefish action has been during the morning.

At Cape Point, a few puppy drum and flounder were taken Friday. Lots of small bluefish, gray trout weighing as much as five pounds, scattered puppy drum between five and 10 pounds and keeper flounder were landed around Hatteras Inlet.

Small bluefish and a few Spanish mackerel were taken by half-day charters around Oregon Inlet. Headboat fishing around the inlet was good, with big croaker decked. A few croaker and small gray trout were landed in Croatan Sound.

Fair numbers of wahoo, scattered tuna and a few dolphin were taken in the Gulf Stream by the Oregon Inlet fleet. One billfish was released by the Pollyanna.

Charters out of Hatteras caught good numbers of dolphin, wahoo and a few tuna. Blue marlin were released by the Top Billing, Chapin, Albatross III and Outlaw.

Water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 76 degrees Friday. by CNB
