The 1995 boom in coal loadings in the port of Hampton Roads slowed in August. Compared with last August, coal dumpings increased just 2 percent to 4,357,770 tons, according to the Hampton Roads Maritime Association. So far this year, coal loadings are up 22 percent to 28 million tons. The two largest coal terminals, Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Pier 6 in Norfolk and Dominion Terminal Associates in Newport News, shipped slightly less coal this August than last. Only the smaller Pier IX Terminal Co. in Newport News showed an increase, a 68 percent surge to 536,896 tons.
