MAURY STOPS 12-GAME LOSING STREAK

The area's longest losing streak ended Friday amid the pouring rain at Harbor Park.

Maury (1-3) overcame a week of off-the-field adversity to shock First Colonial, 7-0, and end a 12-game skid.

According to coach Bobby Pannenbacker, the Commodores earned more than the victory.

``After the first win, they get to put the Maury logo on their helmets,'' Pannenbacker said. ``We've been playing kind of naked the last three weeks. They have to earn it. They did it by working real hard and seeing the big picture.''

The Commodores battled a week of emotionally charged problems.

``This is one of the toughest weeks I've ever lived through,'' he said. ``I have a junior varsity player in the hospital who had a stroke, and a player's brother got shot. Three other players had a 103 degree fever with the flu, and I've had the flu too.''

However, his players rose above everything. Lamont Hurst raced 36 yards to put the Commodores within striking distance in the first quarter. He then streaked 14 yards for a touchdown to cap a four-play, 51-yard drive.

First Colonial (1-2) was hampered by fumbles, a toughened Maury defense and a driving rain, which began at halftime and dampened the Patriots' hopes of a comeback.

``The guys proved themselves this week,'' Pannenbacker said. ``We had punishing practices. They learned what it takes to be winners. You have to earn it.''

Salem 3 Tallwood 0

VIRGINIA BEACH - Despite getting only one first down and 61 yards of total offense, the Sun Devils stunned the fifth-ranked Lions, courtesy of a 27-yard Kevin Miller field goal and an opportunistic defense that forced six turnovers.

Salem's Richard Holland intercepted two passes deep in his own territory to thwart Tallwood scoring chances, and also blocked the punt that set up Miller's second-quarter field goal.

Holland's block was recovered by John Backus at the Tallwood 21. Four plays later, Miller, a sophomore and the star of Sun Devils' golf team, connected on his second field-goal attempt of the game. In the first quarter, a 45-yarder was wiped out by a motion penalty. He then was short from 49 yards out.

The Lions had numerous scoring opportunities wiped out by turnovers. Their best chance came late in the third quarter, when they had first-and-goal at the Salem 10. Three plays produced 8 yards, but Salem recovered a Derrick Daniels fumble in the end zone on fourth and goal from the 2.

``This was the most stressful game I've ever coached,'' said Salem coach Bill McTyre, whose Sun Devils improved to 2-1, 2-0 in the Beach District.

TaRon Anderson finished with 94 yards rushing for Tallwood (2-1, 1-1).

Green Run 34 Ocean Lakes 6

VIRGINIA BEACH - Edward Cuffee took charge of a lackluster offense, scoring three touchdowns and gaining 102 yards on 13 carries.

The third-ranked Stallions (3-0, 2-0 Beach) fell behind in the first quarter when Dolphins linebacker Henry Matthews recovered a fumble at the Ocean Lakes 46. Marcus Wilcox scored on a 1-yard run 11 plays later, but that was about the only offense Ocean Lakes (1-3, 1-2) could muster.

After Ocean Lakes went ahead, the Stallions drove 63 yards on 10 plays in a possession that should have ended with a punt from midfield. Green Run was called for holding on third down, but Ocean Lakes decided to push the Stallions back instead of declining for a fourth-and-7 situation. On the third-and-17 play, Cuffee threw to Ben Root for 33 yards and a first down. An Ocean Lakes unsportsmanlike-conduct call gave Green Run another first down and Dink McPherson took it in from the 7 two plays later.

Cuffee then banged off touchdown runs of 38, 4 and 13 yards to give Green Run a 27-6 lead with about six minutes remaining.

Cox 26 Kellam 17

VIRGINIA BEACH - Quarterback Bart Dexter ambled 39 yards for a touchdown with 1:30 left to put the game out of reach for Cox in a Beach District game.

Cox (2-1, 2-0) led, 20-17, when the Falcons defense forced Kellam to turn the ball over on downs with 2:13 left. It then took Dexter just two plays to score, running 4 yards on first down, then sweeping the left end for the touchdown.

Dexter rushed nine times for 80 yards and completed all five passes for 69 yards and a touchdown. Leroy Ellsworth ran 5 times for 70 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Kendrick Jacobs led Kellam (1-2, 0-2) with 64 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.

Booker T. Washington 14 Bayside 6

VIRGINIA BEACH - The Bookers (3-1) rallied from a 6-0 halftime deficit to hold off the Marlins (0-3) in an interdistrict game.

Bayside scored with 7:30 left in the first quarter on a 5-yard run by Chris Sherrod that capped an 11-play, 60-yard drive.

The Bookers tied it with 1:45 left in the third quarter when Kamal Gardner returned a 30-yard punt for a touchdown after Bayside was forced to punt from its own6.

After a series of penalties, the Marlins were forced to punt again, setting up another Booker T. score. Dominic Perry found an unguarded Marlos Thomas in the end zone with 8:16 remaining and Shawn Minter ran for the conversion.

Oscar Smith 14 Norcom 6

PORTSMOUTH - Moses Johnson had a 5-yard touchdown catch with 9:02 remaining, then made a deflection to stop a Norcom drive on the next series in a Southeastern District game at Churchland.

Norcom (0-3, 0-3) had the ball deep in Tigers territory three times in the second half but failed to score. The Greyhounds took the second-half kick and marched 58 yards on 12 plays, controlling the ball for seven minutes, before David Satterwhite fumbled at the Oscar Smith 5.

Following Johnson's score, Norcom drove 51 yards to the Tigers' 10 before Johnson batted away a Michael Ponds pass intended for LaShaun Britt in the end zone with 4:10 to go.

After a 17-yard Oscar Smith punt, the Greyhounds had the ball on the Tigers' 26. But an offensive pass interference penalty and three incomplete passes killed that drive.

Kempsville 37 Princess Anne 12

VIRGINIA BEACH - The seventh-ranked Chiefs responded to an early 6-0 deficit with touchdowns on their first six possessions.

Trey Simkins led Kempsville (3-0, 2-0 Beach District) with 104 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

In a surprise move, Princess Anne (0-3, 0-3) used running back Marcus Cornick at quarterback to open the game. The tactic paid off when Cornick ran a keeper 59 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game.

But the Chiefs took the ensuing kickoff and launched a 15-play, 73-yard drive that culminated in Zeb Clark's 1-yard scoring run. The drive set the tone for the remainder of the game, as Kempsville continued to control the ball and the line of scrimmage.

The Chiefs held Princess Anne star running back Mike Majette to just 43 yards (6 in the first half) on 14 carries.
