OCTOBER WILL BE the month for roses in Virginia, with the 59th annual Rose Show of the Garden Club of Virginia scheduled Oct. 4 and 5 near Berryville, Va., followed Oct. 7 and 8 by the annual fall meeting and rose show of the Colonial District of the American Rose Society at the Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach.
The state show this year is called ``Through the Looking Glass,'' a whimsical theme chosen to show that exhibiting can be easy and fun even for novices, explained show chairwoman Elaine Brandt.
More than 500 rose enthusiasts are expected to attend, with more than 100 exhibitors at the show, including some from Hampton Roads. The show is free and open to the public, but registration is recommended for most classes.
It will be held in the Clarke County Parks and Recreation Center on Business Route 7, two miles west of Berryville in the northern Shenandoah Valley.
