WILLIAM L. SUMNER

William Lawrence Sumner, 57, of West Tateway Road, died Friday, Sept. 22, 1995, in a Chesapeake hospital.

Mr. Sumner was born in Ellwood City, Pa., and retired to the Outer Banks in 1989. He was a member of the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church and an avid golfer and bowler. Mr. Sumner received his MBA and his Ph.D. in Higher Education at the University of Pittsburgh, and was a professor at the University of Pittsburgh for 20 years prior to his retirement. He also served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Sumner was the son of the late Dr. Harold R. Sumner and the late Mary Elizabeth Minteer Sumner. He was the husband of Cheryl Virginia Barr Sumner of the home.

Besides his wife, Mr. Sumner is survived by one brother, Dr. Thomas E. Sumner of Winston-Salem, N.C.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church by the Rev. L. Spottswood Graves. The family will receive friends at the Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the Outer Banks Cancer Society, c/o Rosa Hauck, P.O.
