A visit to the mailbox on Saturday brought an unsettling discovery for a resident of the 5100 block of Cape Henry Ave.: an explosive.
The resident called police about 2 p.m., and an officer quickly determined that the suspicious device could be dangerous.
A state police bomb squad removed the device from the mail box about 4:30 p.m. and ``rendered it safe,'' a spokeswoman said.
Police routinely decline to divulge details about the nature and construction of such devices.
The remains were turned over to Norfolk Fire Department investigators.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Norfolk Crime Line at 664-4040.
