Stunning play by goalkeeper Nathan Olansen kept Old Dominion in position to win, and a header by Carlos Vasco after 112 minutes finally ended the frustration as the Monarchs claimed their third straight MetLife Soccer Classic title with a 1-0 overtime win against Loyola College at the ODU soccer stadium.

William and Mary defeated Adelphi 4-0 for third place.

Olansen, who earned his second consecutive shutout by punching away shot after shot that seemed destined to find the back of the net, was named most valuable player. Vasco and teammates Emilio Romero and Byron Mitchell made the all-tournament squad.

``We figured it would come down to one goal, but I wasn't looking for overtime,'' said Olansen, who finished with six saves. ``There wasn't an even flow from either team. They'd break out or we'd break out . . . it was more like a horse race.''

The Greyhounds (5-3), who came into the contest riding a five-game win streak, had lost to ODU just once in the last nine meetings between the two schools. Neither team managed anything offensively in the first half, with the Monarchs holding a 3-2 advantage in shots.

The lackluster play continued in the second period. Devin Payton threatened to put the Monarchs (5-2) ahead in the 56th minute with a shot headed for the right post, but Loyola goalie Joe Schafer dove and snared the ball with one hand to keep the game scoreless.

Vasco and Romero both had chances in the first 15-minute overtime but failed to connect. Schafer saved a Vasco header from close range with less than 10 minutes to play in the second overtime, but Vasco had the last word, heading a cross from Romero into the right half of the net for his team-leading ninth goal.

ODU outshot Loyola 22-13.

Also named to the all-tournament team were Schafer and Dave Briles of Loyola; Wade Barrett, Chris Scrofani and Billy Owens of William and Mary; and Paul Banegas and Jukka Salasuo of Adelphi.

William and Mary 4, Adelphi 0: Barrett paced the Tribe with his first two goals of the season, and Owens added a goal and two assists as William and Mary snapped a two-game losing skid by crushing Adelphi.

Barrett and Owens scored in the first half to put the Tribe (5-3) in front.

Four minutes into the second half, David McGowan gave the Tribe a three-goal cushion with a header off an Owens cross. Barrett rounded out the scoring less than five minutes later, taking Owens' chest pass and dribbling through the legs of a defender before blasting a shot past the goalie.

Tribe goalies Paul Grafer and Scott Powers each had a save to combine on the shutout, the Tribe's first of the season. by CNB
