CHILL WINDS AND HIGH SEAS PUT A DAMPER ON THE FISHING FRONT

Blustery, rainy weather over the past week kept most boats in port along the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina.

Early in the week, it was rough seas kicked up by the far-away passage of Hurricane Marilyn. Then it was a strong cold front and accompanying northeast winds, dropping the thermometer into the 50s in most areas.

In spite of the weather, the Eastern Shore All Stars won the inaugural Virginia Beach Surf Fishing Tournament Thursday and Friday, catching 35 fish and scoring 84 points. Team members included Bill Hall, J.T. Bolding, Ron Hall and Bill Mariner. Bill Hall was the event's top angler, beaching 13 fish for 35 points.

Otherwise, action was pretty slow, although freshwater anglers did get in a few good moments on water-supply lakes around Suffolk.
