Health 121: Introduction to Drug Use and Abuse, a three-credit, 10-hour course for professionals and other interested students, begins at 6 p.m. today at Paul D. Camp Community College's Smithfield Center.
The course is taught by Don Shearer, a licensed substance abuse counselor, business consultant and Ph.D. candidate in organizational psychology.
The class will provide information and coping strategies tailored to those whose work or interpersonal relationships require an understanding of drug and alcohol use and a response to substance abusers.
It also will address psychological and behavioral patterns often seen in family members of substance abusers. Spouses, parents and children of substance abusers, as well as professionals serving such populations, can benefit from the course.
Health 121 is one of two 10-week classes the Smithfield center recently added to its fall semester course schedule in response to community requests for additional business-related courses.
