I am a nonsmoker. It seems that some smokers will rationalize any argument in favor of their habit. But Marjorie Bishop (letter, Sept. 7) is far off the mark.
Ms. Bishop recommends that if schools consider banning smoking at outside activities, the sale of pizza, hot dogs, sodas, etc., should also be banned.
Let's consider a high-school football game. If 10 spectators are indulging in pizza, they affect the health of no one around them. But, if those 10 spectators are smoking cigarettes, the health of everyone around them is affected.
My daughter used to spend evenings at Kempsville High School football games with itchy, watery eyes and wheezing to catch her breath. We can be sure it was not from nearby pizza. Second-hand cholesterol, caffeine, fat, etc., do not pollute. Second-hand smoke is a killer.
