The Navy awarded Earl Industries Inc. a $1.9 million contract for work on the submarine tender Frank Cable. The contract will be Earl's first major job in Norfolk Naval Shipyard since 1993. Earl was once reliant on work in the shipyard, but it dried up as Navy repair work got scarce. Workers from the Portsmouth-based firm will clean the sub tender's tanks and sandblast and paint its hull. Earl President Jerrold Miller estimates the job will take 50 to 60 employees several months to complete. The Frank Cable is being transferred from King's Bay, Ga., to an overseas assignment, Miller said. by CNB
